I've seen this headline many times over the last decade, so I'll believe it when I see it:
Orson Welles's Unseen Masterpiece Set For Release
This film is somewhat of a holy grail for me. If you've seen the documentary "Orson Welles: One Man Band" (available as the bonus material on the Criterion Collection edition of "F for Fake") or read Joseph McBride's book Whatever Happened to Orson Welles? you'll see Welles's later work (especially his work on "The Other Side of The Wind") as very similar to most of ours: scrambling and hustling for resources, shooting guerrilla style, wearing many hats. At one point John Huston, who plays the leading role in "Other Side," says something like (I'm paraphrasing here) "Welles points the camera, hangs the lights, claps the slate...he even makes the damn sandwiches!"
This work-in-progress clip that Welles showed in Hollywood before he died is utterly fascinating. Say what you will about the cutting and handheld shots, but Welles is one filmmaker who knew sound was half the experience:
