Using a famous film speech - Permission required?

Let's say in your script, you have a character copy a famous rousing speech from a famous film (example the 'It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving' speech from Rocky Balboa), and maybe mimic's the characters voice....If it's done in a joking way etc...Is this allowed, or does permission required for it...This is for a short film

thanks

You could have a chat to Melania Trump about this, she might have some pointers.

OHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! HE WENT THERE. LOW BLOW!

No you don't need permission for speeches or even notorious historic phrases. After all they're just words that no one has copyright to, and anyone can say; even if you are mocking them. So you should be good.

Copyright law not applicable in your part of the world? He is talking about a specific speech in a movie. Which was written by a screenwriter, therefore is under copyright. Might could get a way with parody but if the speech was written for a movie, that is under copyright.

yeah, it's a light hearted 'parody' of a famous speech...The speech isn't used as if the character has made it up, more he's using it and using the actor who made the speech, distinctive voice when saying it, as this creates humour within the scene...Thanks for the advice

Quality is incorrect about copyright. In the example given (the Rocky speech)
copyright does have a copyright holder.

derek, from what you tell us here it sounds as if you are covered. Parody
is broader than standard copyright. Make sure it's very clear that the character
in your movie is quoting so no "reasonable person" would think you are
trying to pass off the copyrighted speech as your original words.
