favorite Top 5 Favorite Directors Of All Time?

Robert Altman - Just love his style. His patented layered-dialogue is brilliant.

Michael Cimino - I think "The Deer Hunter" is one of the classic American films of all time. (We needn't talk about "Heaven's Gate")

Werner Herzog - If he'd only made "Aguirre: The Wrath of God" I'd have still included him in my list.

Nicolas Roeg - Ditto with "Don't Look Now," one of the creepiest and downright scary movies I've ever seen. (beware of psycho midgets in little red rain coats)

I can't believe nobody's mentioned Stanley Kubrik. Huh. (on edit: oops. Sorry, 2001. My bad)

Who else can make 10 sequels of the franchise "Ernest goes to" movies???

That takes mental stamina beyond belief. What a feat.

Could never name a top five. The following are all honorable mention, in no particular order, and all for being brilliant storytellers of differing types:

Kubrick - For starting my quest to learn what filmmaking is all about. Each film as important and as compelling as the last.

Welles - For Kane and all his later works, and for being an inspiration as an indie director. He spent every day of his life making movies, his way.

Cassavetes - For breaking the traditional molds and telling stories intimately, almost uncomfortably so.

Altman - What yarns this man tells! I can never look away.

Coppola - Beautifully told stories, brilliantly unfolding, so glad he's finally able to do it again.

Scorsese - For his wit and his gorgeous style.

And I know I'm forgetting several.

1. Nolan - Tied for favorite director with Scorsese. His mind twist are amazing.

2. Scorsese- The macho man action while still keeping a deep story.

3. Kurosawa- Visual Mastermind.

4. Fincher- Also visual mastermind but on a more stylistic level I guess.

5. Kubrick- The man who could do anything.

Ill add a sixth...6. Tarantino- Who doesn't love him

I love Kevin Smith but i wouldnt say he is the worlds greatest director, more a writer or downright comedian. I admire Spielberg but....

1. Andreij Tarkowskij - (I hope people aren't annoyed that I mention him wherever I can :) ) He is my personal favourite. His style of making films is different from anything I had seen before, very subjective, very personal, autobiographical at times. I love his use of long shots, and of dream-scenes.

2/3. Jim Jarmusch - Jarmusch despises manipulation of the audience, especially the way music is used in most films. Also his earlier movies were somehow beat. Being on the road is a recurring theme in his movies, a feeling that I can relate to.

2/3. Amos Poe - Jim Jarmusch's first movie Permanent Vacation is practically a no-wave movie and since Amos Poe is more or less the founding father of the no-wave cinema I started to watch some of his movies and was hooked. Apart from his lack of experience and his dilettantism he created films with a very special kind of, somehow existencialistic, mood. Subway Riders being my favourite of his movies.

4. Michael Haneke - I'm not sure if I can consider him one of my favourites because his films are far away from being fun. Michael Haneke's movies are almost a pain to watch, because of the themes he deals with and his reduced, almost minimalistic style. In that he is somehow the exact opposite of Tarkowskij, as Haneke's films are almost hyperrealistic.

5. David Lynch - I'm not sure if he's one of my favourites but I surely like his movies, because of their "weirdness" as some would put it.

Lmao. I don't know if you watch "Family Guy" but there was an episode where Peter goes, "This is harder than when I had to choose between which 'Ernest' movie to rent." and there's a flashback of him at the video store choosing between two videos; one is "Ernest Goes to the Beach" and it shows Ernest surfing on the cover, and the other is "Ernest Doesn't Go to the Beach" and he's quietly reading a book, and Peter looks so nervous and distraught over which to pick. It's hysterical.

LOL That's hilarious, Manchelli.

I've only seen Family Guy a couple times but I can picture the scene because I know the characters - lol.

Finally someone gets my joke!!!

I feel so loved! :)
