They Don't Make Comedies Like They Use To

Life of Brian is effing BRILLIANT! Definitely included among my top 10 all-time favorite movie comedies!

I can prove it for you, man. I've been acting and directing for the stage for more than 20 years. Worked on dozens of comedies. One might expect that some individual audience members would laugh out loud at some lines, and some would laugh at others, ultimately averaging out the responses from night to night, right?

But that ain't the way it works AT ALL. I'm sure that anyone else on here who works in the theatre will back me up on this.

Each collective audience behaves like a unique organism. It's the most astonishing phenomenon. One night, the whole audience will roar at every line, and the next night you can hear a pin drop. Same exact show; same exact performances.

I can't explain this phenomenon, other than to say that, clearly, humans unconsciously respond with a group mentality to the subtlest cues from those around us. After performances on quiet nights I've asked audience members what they thought of the show, and typically got the same positive responses as on the loud audience nights. For whatever reason, they just didn't express their appreciation audibly.

I also know a few people who always laugh out loud when they're at a show, regardless of what the rest of the audience is doing. Invariably, they have the rest of the crowd going by the end of the first act. As actors, we ADORE these folks! :D

That is fascinating.

One of the greatest of cinematic achievements, ain't it? :)

Well then, it's settled. It's better to see comedy films in crowded theaters. :D

Definately. Thinking back, I remember going to see 'Kevin and Perry Go Large' (a British film, based on a sketch show, starring Harry Enfield, for anybody who may not know (not sure what kind of release it got in the US?)) with my friends. Must've been late 90's. Anyhow, we were all laughing heartily through the whole thing, along with the entire audience.

Six months later, I rented out the DVD. It wasn't funny in the slightest.

My link was in regards to the quote from one of the priests referring to Monty Python as a whole as juvenile and uneducated. Monty Python's Flying Circus (the show) Faced constant criticism over sketches about masturbation, the purely sexual/nude humor in some sketches, the dark comedy (lotsa blood and violence, particularly sketches written by Cleese and Chapman) An 'Undertaker' sketch ends with Chapman offering to eat a corpse. I recommend an excellent documentary by Terry Jones's son called Monty Python: Almost The Truth. A whole segment is dedicated to what people thought of it back then, as well as BBC executives. One executive reportedly complained that the Python team "seemed to wallow in the sadism of their humor."

Life of Brian did contain juvenile humour but it contained much other clever and intelligent humour and the juvenile humour it did contain was exceptionally well executed.

And all I am saying is that all these "juvenile" movies today do exactly the same thing.

"What a terribly juvenile film with no comment on certain aspects of family life or our ignorance toward own mortality."

"How childish... certainly shows no emotion there over a lost romance."

Man, the entire movie "I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry" is a commentary on America's homophobia.

Enough with Adam Sandler. What are some other (recent) comedies you think are without the same level of social commentary LoB had?

If Adam Sandler movies consisted of nothing but stuff like this, I'd say some of his critics have a point.... (though itd still be funny)
