The Island Rip-off?

I saw something about a film shot in the early 90's that was the same story as "The Island", but it was low budget and wnet straight to DVD. Problem is, the original author never sold the script or property to Dreamworks, so it is Copyright theft.

Anyone know anything about the original film?

How do you know the author didn't sell rights to Dreamworks? And what is the low-budget film you speak of?

A lot of movies can seem like rip-offs, but the truth is that a lot of stories can seem similar but not fall into the legal definitions of copyright infringement.

Poke,

A couple of weeks ago I was surfing and one website had a discussion about this and even some comments from the original filmmaker, who denied any sales to Dreamworks. Now I wish I had made a note of the discussion, but I've had several times of power loss at my house due to high temps and a too small transformer to my house.

One of the comments was how an exact scene in the original was copied in the new film. If it is true, Dreamworks may be in for a law suit. It's hard to imagine a large studio outright ripping off an relatively unknown film from more than ten years ago, but copyright infringments have happened and lawsuits have been filed before.

I'd like to know if anyone else here has heard of this situation.

I can't seem to find that website, so I hope maybe someone here has also heard of it.

When I first saw the trailer (at the Apple site), I thought it was a take on Logan's Run.

The page you linked wasn't too specific. Neither was the page that linked from that, which was the one to forward to friends, etc. Additionally, all the speculation was based on a trailer... noone had actually seen The Island yet (at the time that was written), to do a full and fair comparison.

Now that the film is actually out, there are probably some websites that have done some detailed comparisons... for better or for worse.

:)
