I don't know if the photo is iconic, and we had a discussion a while back on how iconic isn't as long-lasting as it used to be. Anyway, sleuths have found the original photo that was the final scene of the movie - I thought the producers just got a bunch of extras to pose with Jack Nicholson, but, apparently, it was from a real photo.
To me, the horror in that photo comes from the ghosts being from the past, and, since he's now in that photo, he's become a ghost as well, trapped in the Shining.
