The Droste Effect help!

Hi everyone. I'm trying to pull of a really nice effect known as the "droste" effect.

does anyone know how i can go about doing this the best way possible in Adobe After Effects cs3?

How did you made this? Can you lift the curtain a little bit? My humble guess would be that you exported the video to a still for each frame and then applied the mathmap effect…?

I did see a video here escherdroste.math.leidenuniv.nl/​index.php?menu=animation that uses this effect, but that is only on one image.
