Stock Footage sources

Hi there,

I am looking to procure some stock footage for a documentary and would be interested to hear any opinions on the best websites offering this service.

While I'm not at all averse for paying for footage my budget is relatively limited. Having said this, price may have no bearing if I come across some particularly useful clips.

Primary fields of interest: natural disasters, animals, war footage and misc newsreels.

In terms of quality, full HD is preferable though not essential.

Thanks if you can help!

You could try public domain archives, videohive.net, pond5.com

The latter 2 are really cheap for HD stock footage and other various things you would need for a project.

Getty images is the best place for actual news type footage, but is also incredibly expensive and most of the clips are rights managed (opposed to royalty free).

istockphoto is in the middle, some pricey stuff, but pretty much all of it is quality.

Pond5.com is a mix match or really killer stuff and some so-so stuff, but the prices usually can't be beat and they give more percentage wise to producers than most other sites.

videoblocks has some OK footage, but a great price (as you start looking around for stock footage, you'll discover this.

secret.. if you sign up and then cancel, they MIGHT call you back with a great monthly rate...

Thanks for the suggestions!

Does anyone know of services that provide 30-60 minute collections of high quality dubs from the masters of a selection of individually chosen clips/segments of clips?

It's not actually an unlimited trial. I think you can get 10 clips per day (otherwise you'd just dump the whole archive during the trial and never sign up). Though it IS unlimited in the sense that you can get any clip in their archive. Definitely worth doing, and set yourself a reminder to cancel before the trial is up. They e-mailed me with a lower monthly rate less than a day after I cancelled.
