Starting out

Hey guys I have been wanting to get into filmmaking for the past 2 years. Watching tutorials and reading through countless forums. I have put in some money for equipment over the past 2 years always thinking I was finally going to use them. But there is one problem that I cannot over come. Ideas. I have done some 10 second things just to perfect my techniques but the main issue for me is that I cannot come up with a single idea for a short. I once had an idea but it was shot down because of its gruesome nature. So can anyone help me find inspiration for my first short. I have a micro budget and am only in high school. I honestly don't even know where to begin on thinking of an idea that I could actually do. If anyone used to have this problem but over came it, or can help me please reply below.

You can always recreate a scene from another film or try to adapt a story, that way you get to practice. Also don't beat yourself up trying to get an idea, they usually come by themselves when you least expect them

You don't have to be a screenwriter. Look for scripts that appeal to you and direct one of them. Start with a very short project. Some of my favorite shorts are from the Filminute Film Festival; all entries are 60 seconds or less.

You don't have to direct at all. Work for free as a DP, PSM/Boom-op, Grip, Gaffer, script supervisor, PA, line producer, 1st AD or any number of other positions to gain some experience and expand your network.

Not all of us are director material. I do audio post, others edit, some do financing or any of the dozens of other jobs needed to make a film. Maybe you're one of us.

BTW, I'll bet that some of your gear is "outdated" already. :D:lol::D

The Problem with working on a set is the fact that im 14 and no one wants a 14 year old on there set

ah, I hear the same thing from other 14 year olds.. so connect with other INTERESTED 14 year olds.. 'cmon, its the internet age, it aint that hard. Get out of your comfort zone and make some eye contact and who knows, you may find other film makers in your area. ;)

At 14 that puts you in... what? 9th grade?
Got an AV club there?
Got a school play being produced?
Surely you have a school football team with cheerleaders/color guard and a school band, right?
ROTC?
What do your friends or buddies do when they're not in their caves playing COD or MGS?

Get involved with some extra curricular activity with someone.
Ask (permission for school stuff, if needed) if you can just simply document what they're doing.
Practice your camera work and audio collection, then practice your video and audio editing.
Harass the drama club to shoot their play.
Harass the school choir and symphonic band to shoot their performances.

At some point A) you're going to think of a story that you can do, and B) you're going to notice some people who will work in front of the camera and those who will work behind the camera.

What's the next holiday coming up? Labor Day? Sept 2.
Who's going to be doing what?
What can you go shoot then?
