The premise seems to be untenable. How can we feel bad for two moochers?

I'm not certain where the dark comedy comes in? When I think dark comedy I hear the Fight Club line,"God! I haven't been fucked like that since kindergarten." Dark, but funny, in context.

It looked nice, but it seemed flat.
