The indie film I'm writing will be on a microscopic budget, however I plan for there to be a substantial amount of shootouts. Does anyone know how I could get a hold of cheap squibs, or just make them on my own?
I don't like it. Unless you're planning on becoming a professional in this field, I think it's a horrible idea to mess around with it. A squib is an explosive. It's just a movie, don't mess around with your cast and crew's safety.
Yeah, I wouldn't mess around with any explosives, I certainly wouldn't attach them to my actors...
There are lots of other options for practical bullet hit effects, be it a dirt hit or a blood splattering body shot. YouTube has numerous tutorials for this sort of thing. Try checking out IndieMogul, I know they have some ideas you might find interesting.
You can. Just do so knowing that when you make your own device using
anything that explodes you can be held liable if anyone is injured. As the
others have said their are other alternatives to a true "squib" - maybe
you can try a few of those before you try building your own.
