Seems a good choice to me Crash...
Im sorta committed to PC and what not, but IF I HAD the money to start over, Id go mac and FCP.
On PC you might try some other software, adobe CS stuff is popular and what I use, Vegas seems to have a big following.
Are you using an intermediary codex (cineform)? if I didn't use one my system would be as slow as molasses..

codex are important, but deep understanding is not required..

focus on the AVHCD video format which is what your camera records in.
