Should I get a shotgun mic, or a digital recorder?

A have a little over $300 to spend on audio equipment at the time. While I will eventually get both a shotgun mic and a digital recorder, I only have enough money for one or the other currently. Should I get the Zoom H4n or the RodeNTG2 and Rode DeadcatWind Muff?

If I were to get the Zoom H4n, I would use its built in stereo mic to begin with. If I get the Rode NTG2, I will use it directly plugged into my Panasonic GH2.

Shotgun +1

The GH2 let's you set levels right? The preamps are probably junk, but if you got a recorder what would you send into it?

Don't pair an H4n and the NTG2 though. That combo results in low levels, better to put it with a Tascam DR100 (for that price range recorder) or a nicer recorder in general.

Just be aware that mics that supply their own phantom power - like the NTG-2 or the AT897 - tend to have lower output levels than other mics. Also be aware that the H4n and the DR-100 have lower input levels real production sound recorders.
