/// Shot by a Canon! T2i T3i etc...

It seems there are an abundance around here of shorts (and a rare feature or two) shot with:
- Canon EOS 550D/EOS Rebel T2i/EOS Kiss X4
- Canon EOS 600D/EOS Rebel T3i/EOS Kiss X5
- a few Canon EOS 5D Mark II
- and other Canon camera products

I thought it might be sensible to start a thread dedicated to displaying them with the intent of being able to see how each other is using the same tool for different outcomes and maybe/likely swap know-how kinda specific to that line.

With each filmmaker's permission, and in no particular order, I'd like to begin with several I've culled from a forum search (or two ;) ).

T2i - klbasey

7D & T3i - Dreadylocks
For the upcoming "Stockholm Santa."

Hey, are you using that same camera for "The Kohlman Files"?

Y'know, it's pretty insane what the big boys can do in post. I mean, I'm sure it's still not easy, fast, or cheap. But still.

I watched a little BTS for Black Swan. In those dance studio shots with all the mirrors they literally edited out the reflections of the entire crew. Totally seamlessly. It was incredible.

I think that first post needs a lot of cleaning.

I thought the point was to show quality stuff.

I personally love this channel on Vimeo (T2i then GH2)
https://vimeo.com/davidhjlindberg/videos

Although that's a very dick-ish thing to say, the link you provided is a good one. That guy is a master of color-correction, and I think that's another super important thing that overshadows the importance of the camera. We should have more discussions on coloring. :)

I'm sorry but since I really have a slow Internet connexion these times, I just felt kind of upset when I watched some of those videos after waiting too much time for them to load. I

But in truth I just misunderstood the purpose of this topic. It aims to show the variety of things one can do with the tool. Not any quality criteria there.

Anyway, glad you liked David's work, he really is a mastro. And what he's doing with the hacked GH2 + Da Vinci Resolve is just ridiculously beautiful. What I liked most is that I saw earlier on this forum a video of Stu Maschwitz explaining the importance of opposing orange and blue in your color correction. And this is exactly what David is doing.

Why can't people on the internet be positive rather than point out faults or at least be constructive?
Because people think their 2% genetic difference from chimpanzees makes them demi-gods, when in fact they are not much better than an angry, frustrated chimpanzee attacking what it doesn't understand.
This applies to all aspects of their monkey-brained lives.

Ha, thanks Ray for adding my little short :) Hopefully I will be able to punch out some sweet stuff later on with this jib.
Ah, you're welcome!

Looks like you have some more Canon fodder: http://www.youtube.com/user/krotoflik/videos
Silo Assault, On The Run, The Package, etc.
Mind if we just throw links to the relevant shorts on this post?

Be my guest! This is your thread, you are in control. :)
No, sir.

Even though I'm a GH2 guy... The T2i is the camera I traded in for a GH2.

Thanks for the shout-out Ray! I really appreciate you disseminating that post - Ken Simpson is a hero of the digital cinema revolution, and more filmmakers should read what he has to say.

Now for my contribution to this thread - if someone hasn't already posted it.

Even though I'm a GH2 guy, one of my favorite shorts was shot with a T2i for $50. It is "The Camera", by Peter Lewis: http://vimeo.com/32655795

The T2i is the camera I traded in for a GH2. This is a real lesson in humility for me. Peter went out and shot a great film with what he had, instead of trading it in for "something better" first.

Cheers,

Bill

My team's been shooting exclusively on the 5D since 2009. Just about everything we do is in timed competitions like the 48 hour film project, so it's not an example of the absolute best you can get out of the camera given plenty of time - but we try to make things look as good as possible in the limited time we have:

Documentary:

I suppose it comes down to trade offs. I've been impressed by the GH2 video I've seen. I've been trying to talk myself into buying a GH2...to embrace the GH2. I may still.

But this thread calls my attention to what seems to be, if an inconvenient one, a fact that video out of the Canon cameras just looks better to me.

I'm not absolutely certain, but pretty certain.

Yes, moire is bad. Rolling shutter blows, and blows hard. The GH2 apparently handles those things much better.

The shooting time limit with the Canons sucks big time. If only the new Canon T4i had thrown that out the window. But it didn't, did it? Kinda foolish on Canon's part (isn't it?) and definately disappointing for users.

I don't know, does it come down simply to the larger sensor size? But, looking at unmanipulated test video from the Canons, it just seems to me that their video out-of-camera aesthetically beats the GH1 and 2...apart from moire and rolling shutter.

I see that Premiere and Vegas both claim to offer software solutions to fixing rolling shutter? Do those work well?

But in any case, I second what Cracker said. Watching short films, it seems clear that a lot of indi filmmakers pay too little to no attention to lighting or even light modifying. A lot is said about not paying attention to sound. But clearly, we'd do well to pay a lot more attention to lighting as well.
