oscilloscope with a simple timer circuit?
Have you looked for a heart monitor?
loop Playback a video on an old PDA (maybe iphone or cell). Insert into cardboard box, paint on buttons.

oscilloscope was my first thought as well. I made a sci fi "device" for my last film (that read a person's thoughts) out of an old oscilloscope and some junk ham radio parts.
