SAG Penalties?

What are the penalties to a SAG (not FI core) actor who takes on a non union role? Has anyone had experience with dealing with SAG on this issue? How likely is it that they will get caught? I mean really? I am shooting a non union feature and need the low down on this issue.

As far as the film entity itself is concerned this is not an issue.

Any 411 would be great.

The penalties can be a fine and/or loss of membership for
a period of time.

SAG does not watch all movies made, check the actors for
membership, determine if the movie was made under a
SAG agreement and then track down the member. So the
likelihood of the actor getting caught is slim.

I'm casting a non-union movie now. One SAG actor told me that only two members were kicked out of SAG for doing non-union work in their 100 year history. I don't know if that's true but that's what he told me.

I wouldn't work with a SAG member. A fellow who visits town once in a while is a SAG member. He will not even volunteer at the community theater for fear he will lose his membership. You never know.
If I were a member of SAG I wouldn't take the chance.

unless your film ends up making enough money to grab attention, then they won't get caught. I know SAG actors who do it all the time for shorts that don't get a SAG agreement.
