Rules regarding the SAG

I am unclear and pratically ignorant (to be honest) about the rules regarding the use of SAG members.
I had an actor ask me if my auditions were for SAG members only and this is what has sparked the question. Could someone enlighten me?

There are hundreds of regulations regarding auditions, callbacks,
work hours, pay scale, P&W, meals, travel, lodging. No way to
enlighten you on all the rules. But the SAG website can.

If you are not using a SAG contract then the answer to give that
actor is, "We aren't using a SAG contract." What he might be
asking is are you having separate auditions for union and
non-union actors.

Are you using any of the SAG contracts?

I'm a little confused by your answer.

The Screen Actors Guild is the actors union. Since
you have never contacted them and do not have the
contracts then you are not using the guild. This
isn't something that you could be using without
knowing.

Without knowing you or your project I don't know
if you should be using SAG actors or not. At least
one person auditioning has asked if you are. Are
most of the actors auditioning members of the
union? Would it benefit your film to be using union
actors?

I don't know anything about the filmmaking scene
in Charleston or anything about your project. Maybe
you should check out the website and look as what
they offer - and all their restrictions and regulations
- and talk so some of the actors you are auditioning.
The SAG actor who asked the question might be a
great resource. Tell him you aren't currently planning
on using SAG actors but would like to talk to him
about the guild to get more information.

Roger that. I will do so. I have worked with him twice and I do not believe he is a member of the SAG, but I will ask. I am sure that this is something I should familiarize myself with.
