Red State: new Kevin Smith movie

I saw it. Eh. It was interesting in an overdone sorta way. For the record, I am a Kevin Smith fan. I was less than thrilled with Red State though.

I'm a long time fan of kevin smith. both his movies and his podcast network.
So i was naturally very excited for Red State, but felt let down afterwards...

Its like 4 different films rolled into one. that can be great if done right.. but Red State was a little off i thought.
The first 1/3 was really great. it was frightening, mysterious, and different to anything i'd seen before. THEN it turns into this other film, which i wasn't that crazy about. And it just left the whole first third of the film behind without even a look back. THEN it turns into this other film, which i was very intrigued in, it literally made me shiver and sit straight up. but THEN it turns into something else yet again...

I think that was the point though, have the viewer not know whats gonna happen and be shocked and awed when it goes this way, instead of that.. but i thought it would been better if it did go that way instead of this way

It was good, but all over the place.

It kinda reminded me of a bad version of From Dusk Til Dawn. You know how the first half of that movie is this FANTASTIC on the run/dangerous/kidnapping story, then it turns into this vampire action genre romp. I love From Duck Til Dawn, don't get me wrong, but i do think the first half of that movie was far better than the second half.

the only really consistent thing about Red State, and not only consistent but frighteningly amazing, was Michael Parks as the preacher... truly great performance. If nothing else, its worth a watch for him. and a few more watches after that just to see him again.

But i defiantly appreciate and love the gusto in which Kevin Smith has gone about how to make the movie, and then distribute it.

Just watched Red State, the new Kevin Smith movie. This guy is really getting his chops down as a director and screenwriter. This film was intense, inexpensive, and effective. It felt like it lasted 30 minutes, but it was 90. I was literally so drawn into the story that I lost all sense of time. Really amazing work.

Alcove will love this movie.

Anybody else seen it?

No thanks.
