archived-videos Production 2: Party Hearty

MacV,
Very powerful video. Nice video work, great job! It would have been a neat extra effect to zoom in to the guy and show his heart palpitating to emphasize the increased heart rate, but pretty good for a school project.

That would have been really cool. One of the problems I encountered with the concept of this film is, how do you visually portray something that is so internal? Showing the actual heart is one way, and it would have looked really cool. It would have been a good opportunity for some killer art design, too.

One of my ideas was to give the audience a sense of arch, not just in terms of character development, but how they judged the protagonist. It was a risk, I don't know if it paid off. The concept was, at first, the audience would actually dislike Brian. How can you empathize with Brian when he is such bitch; he can't even fake enjoying beer, which he wastes by pouring down the sink (my target audience is the college crowd lol). Most of the jokes are on the main character until he mans up and starts chugging that beer. The goal was that hopefully the audience would begin to empathize with Brian when his hopes are trashed on after chugging. If the audience at first disses the main character, it would be easier to believe and understand the party's attitude towards this kid who obviously needs help.

I don't know if it paid off because I ultimately don't know how the audience will perceive the story. It's really risky to start out a story with an unlikable main character, and now I realize that loads of people probably just started off disliking him and kept on disliking him until the end of the show. Oh well.

I really enjoyed it.

I personally think that there was not enough development for there to be a character arch. But even if there was some time dedicated to "development", something must actually develop. In my eyes, nothing about the character changed from start to end. I felt that he was forced to chug that beer, rather than doing it out of his own will. Thus him giving into peer pressure was really something that kept him as a "bitch" in my eyes. I wouldn't use that word to describe him though :P. That scene made me hate his room-mate though, and anything that can play with my emotions like that, I would consider a strong effort.

Good job! Loved the shots!

everybody's film is special to them, but nice job. I can tell you struggled with the conflict being so internal. I still feel that its still at great film as it is right now though. Hmm I wonder genre is up next for you.

But could you think that you could take down any genre. drama, comedy, action, and all the sub genre? I don't know where I would put Party Hearty, its got a lot of aspects, it could even fall under dark comedy if you wanted it to. I think you were going more towards the drama end, people tend not to take comedy as serious. I will say that Party Hearty drama is more fun to watch than say A Daub type drama

Very nicely executed and cut, Mac. I didn't dislike Brian in the beginning at all; I sympathized with him from the start and only grew more sympathetic as the stakes grew much higher. At first he's just a skinny kid who wants to get out of a stereotypically lame frat-house type party he's uncomfortable with, but then he becomes the victim of a severe medical situation and can't communicate this to anyone around. The character doesn't go through an arc but his stakes do, quickly and severely. You nailed this, both with your actor and your photography/cutting. I especially liked the quick zoom on the heart and the overcranked silent pink-shirted dude yelling at Brian. Not typical editing at all. Good job.

NexRL, I was thinking about that myself because I want to submit Party Hearty to the Student Tv Awards. I think I have a real chance in placing. But under what genre should I submit it under? I suppose drama, but it's not like the story is a Drama per say. One of my professors called it an attempt at a thriller. Which I suppose is true, his life is on the line, there's a time limit, plenty of suspense (hopefully... I wouldn't know. I've seen it too many damned times).

My next projects are going to be different. I'm not quite sure about my intermediate directing project but maybe a romance? It's one of those genres that nobody gets right in film school, it would be great if I could nail it. Wall-E affected me like no other film I have seen, I would love to try to recreate some of that magic.

For my cinematography project, I'm throwing around a couple ideas. One idea was to follow a group of stripped shirt guido douchebags throughout their night on the town, sort of like that New Haircut guy. I'm kinda into that idea because not only could I shoot it real sweet to glorify their obviously kickass life, but the potential for comedy is through the roof.
