That would have been really cool. One of the problems I encountered with the concept of this film is, how do you visually portray something that is so internal? Showing the actual heart is one way, and it would have looked really cool. It would have been a good opportunity for some killer art design, too.
One of my ideas was to give the audience a sense of arch, not just in terms of character development, but how they judged the protagonist. It was a risk, I don't know if it paid off. The concept was, at first, the audience would actually dislike Brian. How can you empathize with Brian when he is such bitch; he can't even fake enjoying beer, which he wastes by pouring down the sink (my target audience is the college crowd lol). Most of the jokes are on the main character until he mans up and starts chugging that beer. The goal was that hopefully the audience would begin to empathize with Brian when his hopes are trashed on after chugging. If the audience at first disses the main character, it would be easier to believe and understand the party's attitude towards this kid who obviously needs help.
I don't know if it paid off because I ultimately don't know how the audience will perceive the story. It's really risky to start out a story with an unlikable main character, and now I realize that loads of people probably just started off disliking him and kept on disliking him until the end of the show. Oh well.
