Opinion on my first short film festival

Hi,

i'm currently attending a small short film Festival in Norway. I just missed the first day and we closed today Day 3 of screenings.

I can't help but notice how most of the films fall within the same "genre". i'm talking about this "metaphorical" kind of movie where there is no real narrative, story or character development.

After two days of watching shorts like this, i'm already fed up.. I'm gonna blow at the next filmmaker who presents to me his "take on reality" with a silent short movie (they are always very silent), with LONG BORING shots on the eyes of a character hurt inside, going through some metaphysical shit and absolutely no storyline..

This one stuck with me : vimeo.com/54148068. Just get amazed at how long the scene is. And then imagine that every scene in the film is like that, without nothing happening.

What the hell ? I'm longing for the next action short, or at this point, anything with a story really...

On the good side, we had a very cool guest, Cordel Barker, a kick ass animator (not CGI). Today he showed us his work and talked about his career and answered to our question. Tomorrow we're going to have a workshop with him. i'm so hyped.

As you know movies are just another art form - so expect insanity, ambiguity, incoherence. Whatever is good/bad/crazy with humans you see it on screen. good luck :yes:.

Maybe that's the kind of films they like in Norway. Have you tried watching any local television shows?

Heck, the difference between American & British television is massive and they both speak the same language!

Can you link to a playlist of films or a festival website close to your home back in North Africa? I wouldn't mind checkin' some of those out. Probably very... not-Norway. :)

The festival screens three categories : Nordic (anything scandinavian except Norwegian), Norwegian and International.

I had the same feeling with every category. Maybe there's just something wrong with the people who are choosing the movies...

As for North Africa... I hate to say this but i don't know much about what's going on there right now, film-wise. I became interested in filmmaking two years after starting living in France. But I do know that Morocco is big on films and is used as a giant studio for a lot of films, especially Ouarzazate.

There is an International Film Festival in Marrakech (famous touristic city).

LMAO! :lol::lol::lol:
I'm not the least bit surprised.

'Fraid so.

These slow boring esoteric faux-philosphical shorts of little meaning and direction sound an awful lot like the slow boring esoteric faux-philosphical indie films of little meaning and direction (often substituting dysfunction as entertainment in lieu of actual entertainment) I've been watching getting distribution after Sundance for the past two years. :(
