New York Film Acadamy

I have a few questions about the NYFA.... Number 1.... Will having a 4 or 8 week diploma from one of there course really help me get a film job?

Second, I know they have "summer" courses fro high school age students.... But can I also take the classes that happen all year long? Iv asked the NYFA, but they cant seem to reply to me for some reason.

That's not a good sign :x

You will have to verify that with NYFA.

I have no idea what their accredidation (sp?) is, but if they are a full college (or even 2 year CC) it will vary from state to state. (Attendance)

Here in CA, high-school students can get a headstart on college credits at a CC if they have the appropriate approval. They cannot take fulltime college but pick a course or two, over a year.

If they don't, they can still take no-credit classes at CCs just for the learning. (Pretty sure that's correct.. been a while since I read the booklet on that)

NYFA is not part of any accredited college or university. They do not offer any degrees. While I doubt that anyone would hire you just becase you have a certificate from them, they do claim to emphasise hands on experience, which could be helpful i landing you a job. There's a fair amount of info at their website:http://www.nyfa.com/

I went to a Dov S-S Simons class last summer, and they both sound like the same concept. If they are, here is what's probably true: their degree (if they have one) is useless, but the classes may not be a waste of time since they probably teach you some very important stuff. In other words, go to learn, but don't tell everyone that you went their and expect to get a job based on that fact.

You know, only people who go to USC film school get hired for their degree (not saying everyone who goes there is into nepotism, but admit it, there is a lot of that floating around amongst Trojans). As has been said, the most important factor is a demo reel showing off your talent.

Poke

My view of the NYFA is that they are pretty pretentious - very expensive - and nothing that you can't get for yourself without paying tuition fees. If you want to make film - make film! You learn much better on the job than you would have if you pay some old geezers to get their take on things. Hmm... by no way am I convinced by NYFA!

"I went to a Dov S-S Simons class last summer"

I tried looking it up on the internet but was unsuccessful. Does anyone have their website address?

is film school necessary anymore?

This brings up an interesting point. While the experience in the nyfa might not hurt. . . it might. Could you get more out of your buck doing an actual project with a small crew perhaps? I think the best way to get a job in film is not through school, but by just going out there and doing it. Yay for digital tech the tools are reachable. It's all about what you've done. Show people what you can do. If you need a school in order to get the opportunity to use the equipment and experience, then sure, but you can get experience lots of other ways too. In my opinion.
