archived-videos New Video - "The Sun"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8BTjg7gyAM4

This is a video for "The Sun" by Chicago duo TheGr8Ruler. I shot it at 60fps with the intention of playing around the speed (although I ended up not doing that too much in the final cut). I'm trying to get into making professional music videos so I'm really looking forward to any feedback you guys have. Thanks!!

It looks decent enough, except for the frame edge thing someone must have insisted upon. This isn't vacation homes of the Caribbean.

That said, I'm not a big fan of videos where nigg*** is a repeated line.

I feel you do really good work, but I would shy away from divisive content where 87% of your potential audience is alienated. Just my thoughts. Peace and good luck.

This song is called The Sun, but I didn't see the sun one time...??

Also, I get the vibe this is suppose to be a "comin up/give you hope" type song, so why not throw some youngsters jumping rope, or playin hop-scotch, etc. Or even a mom holding her baby, you know, stuff that makes you feel good. Or you could even tell a visual story that;s completely independent from the song?

That shuffle thing, at the change up, got old, quick.

I enjoyed it.

I caught at least 2 shots of the sun, a long one durring the last chores.

I actually like the fact that he used the sun sparingly, and didn't do any cliche things like having the kids playing which is very common in rap videos. I think it's easy and cheap to do embodiments of songs, like if he had show the sun every time the artist said the word. I think it's more appropriate to compose towards the concept and metaphor rather then the actual allusion it's self.

I appreciate the fact that you just shot, chopped, and corrected it quite well, I think it speaks for you and the artist quite well. I also liked what you did with the boarder. I was put off for a second as well, but if your not watching it on the full screen, and watching it on the youtube or facebook page without expanding, it looks like it's been cut out of the screen and gives a really cool dimension. I wasn't sure about it till the end when it closed back up and I was like, aaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh......

Thanks for the feedback guys. Nobody's said anything about the border to me yet- I was wondering what other people thought about it so I'm glad you guys brought it up haha

I actually would have liked to get a few more shots of the sun and the sky, but I still don't have a filter yet so I got what I could given how bright it was. I'm hoping to pick one up soon

Now, let's not go overboard. I was thinking more of a timelapse sunrise at the beginning. Then a sun set at the end. someting like that. And about putting children in there. I wouldn't call it easy just because it works. I'm not bashing this guys video, but all I see is two guys rapping there song. I, personally, would like a story of some type. And if you look at a lot of the most sucessful rap artists that have been able to cross genres and be popular with many demographics, they told stories. Visually or verbally.

Word, I didn't think you where bashing his video, and I did over exaggerate with my sun reference. :D

And I agree about having some sort of story line, I just thought the actual visuals you presented where over used and cliche for a rap video. I would personally prefer a raw well done video like this was as opposed to some thing with visuals that have been used 100 times, but then again that's just personal taste!

Haha... well, I agree with both of you guys. Except for my favorite artists, I don't even watch rap videos anymore because most of them are generic and lazy.

I like the combination of well done visuals mixed with a good story. That's what I try to go for when I shoot, but at the level I'm at right now it usually comes down to the amount time and resources that are available the day of the shoot
