New Toys...

It seems that the audio world is listening to indie filmmakers.

Already out is the Tascam DR-100mkII ($330). Preliminary indications show that it's an improvement on the original.

Coming out in February in the Olympus LM-100 ($400); the specs look awesome for a budget unit, we'll see what my peers have to say in April. (Yes, April; they have to work it hard for a month or two to see how it really stacks up.)

Damn, i purchase a recorder this month :( these units looks nice, very nice :)

They're so inexpensive! Glad to know these economical models have at least whetted the interest of our resident audio guru. This can only be a positive development for the little-guys!

Have they moved the meter to somewhere useful on the Tascam?
One of my main issues with it was not being able to peek at the levels when I slung it round me. LED meters would be cool too.
Basically they need to rip off the Marantz;)

Wt's the MSRP on that DSLR-mounted one? Don't see a price on the website.

Not announced as of yet. My guess would be probably in the $300 to $400 range, street price.

Now, what I would have done was had a multipurpose cable option that terminates in a small remote with an LED readout (time and levels) that can strap to the wrist and a jack for headphones

As recorders are being miniaturised and, as with the above rode, being integrated into other kit how far away do you think a recorder/boom is? Wouldn't that be nice for simple setups? Record button, meter and record level all on the boom handle and no bloody trailing wires (except of course for headphones but considering the distance involved wireless in deffo an option).

Cool new stuff indeed. Whenever the price comes down on quality gear, talent becomes more and more the thing that makes or breaks your production, which is the way it should be.

Don't get me wrong, big budget will still and likely always be the most successful, but every step we're offered is still a win haha.
