Needing some inspiration

Oh I feel ya!! I had 2 weeks of nothing but lame Boring ideas. And then BAM!!! Been sleeping for 4 hours this weekend but banged out 14 page cool lil screenplay :)

Get out to the world and keep the eyed open. I got my movie idea as I was driving from a grocery store and saw a guy holding "sale" sign outside of some business. On which I though.. "wouldnt it be weird if a speeding van dropped off a suitcase to the sign holder and told him to protect the content with his life??" and wrote it immediately down.

Inspiration is a weird thing. It shows up when you don't expect it

who cares about originality? The more blatant the rip, the more likely you will make it your own. Seriously. Story telling has been building on top of itself for the entire history of humanity. The root ideas are never original, but the telling.. now thats where the voice of the writer makes something "new."

Go with the idea that inspires you the most, don't worry if you think you've "seen it before" you are your own voice, it will be original.

Agreed a thousand times and more! When you have something original to say, you will say it. Forcing it in an effort to "be original" often seems, well, forced. Study folklore and mythology; the way stories change, adapt, disappear and then come back is almost as interesting as the stories themselves!

If you worry about doing things WELL rather than being original, you'll end up with a better film at the end of the day, unique because you did it with your voice, as wheat said.

okay thanks for the advice! =) it really helped.

There really isn't anything "original" when you bring a story down to the absolute basics. There a millions of variations on the love story, for example. It's the situation and the interactions between the characters that makes it "original."

Yesterday the family and I (re)watched "Ghost Town". The reason Bertam gets involved with Gwen, and how and why the relationship develops, is what makes it "original", or at least presented in a unique way.

I don't think you need to see "short film" as a story. You can if you want, but it's not a lot of time to develop a story as such.

It's more an "event". Or a "situation".

Maybe just think of something happening to someone. Then give it a bit of a back-story. And an ending.

I also think it's a good idea to practice being prolific. Force yourself to write a short film every week for 4 weeks. Even if you don't really like what you're coming up with.

The stories are there you just gotta find them. For example, I went to a local shopping center and saw a father getting in an elevator while the son took the stairs - they were trying to see who got to the bottom first. As I walked away I thought it would be cool if when the father got out, the son wasn't anywhere to be found. Now that's another story I have added to my many in my notebook. Who knows where it will go but I have it just in case.
