NEED HELP WITH PROMOTING AN INDIE FILM

Hi i am new to this forum. im on here to ask if anybody has any tips or advice on how to research indie movie pr companies. specifically in new york. is there a directory i could refer to or does anybody have any company names they can suggest or endorse? how do filmakers find these companies? and who is the best?

Welcome to indietalk, katie!

I can't answer "who is the best?" because you don't mention what
your criteria is. Who is the best at what? And not knowing what
you're looking for makes it difficult to suggest or endorse any company.

I typed "movie production companies New York" into Google and found
a LOT.

You can go to mandy.com and in the pulldown menus select production
companies and New York.

On the Google search I did I found productionhub.com and newyork411.com

To add on to directorik, you might also want to do some of your own viral internet promoting. Make a trailer out of your film and put it on every video site out there. Then make a myspace, and facebook.. ect. and add a bunch of people. Get friends to help. It is pretty simple and free :). The internet is the best play to expose. If it wasn't for the internet, Obama wouldn't have succeeded with his campaign.

ok

ok thanks. so do you think that promoting it yourself online is preferable to paying a pr company these days? we have a finished movie. therefore do not need a production company as such but are you saying that they are the ones to locate re: pr?

PROMOTION HELP PLEASE (NOT PRODUCTION)

i just looked at my original question and it doea sound like i was looking for a productions company. actually i meant pr as in promotions. we have a finished movie already. just need it promoted. but need the company to be in the new york area as opposed to las where i am seeing most of them are. any tips appreciated. thanks.:). specifically companies that know how to get movies into the various movie festivals etc.

Distributors don’t promote movies in the sense you mean. They
don’t help filmmakers get into festivals. Distributors see movies
in festivals and if they think they can make money they offer to
buy the distribution rights.

Even PR companies don’t help you get into festivals. The way
movies get into festivals is the filmmaker pays the fee and
submits their film. There are a few festivals that accept every
film submitted, but most festivals choose a hundred or so from
the thousands of submissions to show.

Check out withoutabox.com.

A PR company won’t help you get into festivals. But if you have
the money and want to hire one to promote your movie then you
should.

I’m curious - what do you need promoted? A PR company will promote
a screening of a movie - will you be showing the movie in a
theater? A PR company can promote the DVD - do you have DVD’s for
sale?

CAN PR COMPANIES ASSIST YOU IN GETTING IN?

ive heard that if you hire a pr company they can have a relationship with a festival and can assist you with getting your film in over others? is this true?

Distributors are looking for films that make money.
Festivals are looking for good films.

Submit to fests yourself, the movie speaks for itself. What can help is an impressive press kit.
