Hey what's up guys and girls I had a couple of questions! So I want to start on my first film by next December (saving money right now) and was wondering what would be a good camera to use? I'll have about 10-15k to spend and was looking at the BlackMagic URSA cam. What I wanted to know was would that be a good cam to start with to get a very real feel with? Also what would I COMPLETELY need as far as mics and just all around filmmaking package. Suggestions and opinions on everything would totally help thanks a bunch!

Hi TARS1994 - have you considered hiring a DP with his/her own equipment? It will likely save you a lot of time, trouble and money over buying an expensive camera that you would have to learn how to use.
If not, you might want to rent an URSA from Borrowlenses for $272 plus shipping over a weekend to practice with before deciding to shell out $5995 to buy one.

That's a fine camera. I'm hoping you mean Dec. 2015 not the December
that comes in seven days. I'm sure you will take the next year to learn
how to use it . To get "a very real feel" you will need to shoot a LOT. The
camera is just a tool and it takes skill, experience and talent to shoot
good images.

6 lights with stands
2 china balls
8 extension cords
6 power strips
black wrap and gels
2 bounce boards
gaffers tape
a bunch of C-47’s - also called “bullets” (look it up)
a coffee maker
a cooler
a slate with marker
For a "complete" kit you will need;
a dolly (wheelchair or doorway)
a simple grip kit with:
c-stands (at least 6)
flags (assorted sizes - at least
scrims (at least 6)
silks (at least 2)
cookies (at least 1)
sandbags (one for every light/c-stand and then 6 more)
In most cases the grip/lighting and camera support equipment you would
rent on a project by project basis. Unless you have a lot of money and
storage.

What's your first film about?
Shoot on any camera! The camera is the least important part of the equation (and I work professionally in the camera department!).
Seriously, we've done B-roll for television and features on SLRs or Blackmagic Pockets. They can be frustrating to work with as a professional crew who is used to high end digital cinema cameras, but the images can be great.
I've shot docos on SLRs and colleagues of mine have shot low budget commercials on SLRs.
It's not the camera that matters it's the person behind it. I'd rather spend $2k on a camera body and spend the rest on nice lenses, some lights and grip equipment, not to mention sound!
