Narrative Help Needed

Hey guys, this is my first post on this forum, i was hoping somebody give me some tips in my project for using a sound to produce a narrative for an ambiguous visual scene, i will only rely on using sound effects...

the scene i am going to do it on will be the trailer for Prometheus (see below)

what would you guys recommend i look at first and what ideas do you think i should use?

Hope you guys can help me.

I'm not going to tell you exactly what to do - that's what I get paid for!!!

First you'll have to build a sound library. I'm guessing that you have a zero budget, so start with free sound effects. Partners in Rhyme offers a few, and Sound Jay has quite a lot. And, of course, there's FreeSound.org. Do a Google search, there's lots of stuff if you're willing to be patient and dig.

You'll also need a mic to create some of your own stuff; your kitchen can be a gold mine of sound effects fodder, and getting out into the field can be absolutely amazing. If you have a synth that can be quite useful as well.

The essence of sound design is experimentation. Use pitch shifting, time stretching/compression, delay effects, filters and dynamic processing. Try multiple layers of sounds, long cross-fades and reversing. Mix and match all of the above.

Be patient - experiment - have fun!!!

Will this help?

I use Mixcraft for the sound effects and recording my piano and such into it. The program is about $120.00 and is my favorite.

I still don't understand the original Q.

Why the Prometheus trailer, in particular?

sorry if did not phrase the question properly but what i need to do is Produce examples of audio-visual media to a given brief and the brief states that i must

'Use a sound to produce a narrative for an ambiguous visual scene. You should not rely unduly upon dialogue to convey the action but should instead focus on the use of sound effects'.

why the Prometheus trailer, its because that the type of movies i like watching and i can easily get my creative mind to think of ideas once i have a framework to start with.

Firstly you need to figure out in your own mind what type of sounds you want.

Do you want to use sound effects? Do you want to use music? Do you want to use a combination of these?

Once you have some kind of an idea of what type of sound you are after, or can hear something similar in your head, then you need to figure out where to look to find those kinds of sounds.

They may come from a synthesizer/keyboards, they may come from a sound effects library, or a music library, or a combination of these.

Locate the sounds you want. You may find that one sound on it's own is not quite what you are looking for, so you go to the sound effects you have, and consider layering different ones together to achieve the desired effect. Adding effects can then model the sound even closer to what you want to use. Takes practice to get good at this though.

Feedback

hey guys thanks for all the help you've given here is a work in progress of the work ive done so far.

ive created a narrative to tell a story about a outside event looking through a keyhole.. the theme i decided to go for was a alien type invasion.. based of the trailers of Prometheus & Alien and also the game Mass Effect.

Please can you leave some feedback so i can improve on this.

Good Lord, your text descriptions of what you need could use some more "awesome" in them.

You need a story where the sound effects audio conveys the majority of information rather than dialog.
