streaming MGM+ is Foolish

Yesterday I tried for an hour to purchase a HD version of Face/Off to stream

John Travolta Movie GIF

Due to something called HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) to "prevent piracy" it would only stream SD for me.
I paid for an HD film and it's delivered in 480P...

Yes this is a real thing that MGM is doing now.
I tried signing up for MGM+ and even that only streamed in SD for me.

Literally an hour of frustration trying to pay for a movie that ends in failure, This is exactly the kind of bullshit that motivates people to install a VPN and torrent movies instead.

Why is MGM trying to coerce people into becoming pirates?
Personally I'll just not stream MGM movies anymore, but plenty of people will look elsewhere...

The device (monitor/tv) must be HDCP compliant.

At first - I purchased (not rented) the movie on youtube, but got an SD version there.
I "own" the damn movie but you're telling me what screen I'm allowed to watch it on?

If you spent an hour trying to watch Face/Off you wouldn't be happy either 😅
It was a whole thing, I even tried installing the mgm+ app on my apple tv, you don't want all the details and steps.

My point is that the best protection against piracy is to make your content easy to purchase. That's all.

This is giving me flashbacks to the time when DVDs and their players were coded by geographical region. For probably the only time in my live, I was an "early adopter" but it did the industry no favours at all telling me that I couldn't watch this copy of the movie on that machine because they were "incompatible". Really? So "incompatible" that a quick change of one digit in the Windows registry would make it suddenly compatible? In the words of Father Jack ...
