merchant navy documentary

Hello, although film and filmmaking is my passion, I recently decided to join the merchant navy. Its 20- 23 thousand a year and most of it is tax free. I will be working 7-11 months of the year in oil ships and cruise ships. This has nothing to do with film I know.

Me and a friend have went halfs on a GY-HD100 camera for roughly £2800, and a high quality tripod was free. We have bought some filter gels, shot gun mic, lights wireless mic and some other stuff.

I am directing this documentary about life working on vessels the dangers and the highs . Although this may have already been done I think it would be good fun since me and my friend have both joined the same shiping company.

Now what things should I be looking to be shooting while I'm out there. Any suggestions at all.

Shoot and log everything you can possibly imagine...get as much coverage of your entire journey as possible. As your journey progresses, you'll figure out where you want your story to go.

It might be possible to also get a series of stock footage or green screen/composite intended shots that could be useful to someone who would otherwise never have access to such locations.

You could do weather, aquatic life, time lapse or even some kind of “Ghost of a ship/Driven nuts by solitude at sea” horror short (IF you can find a few people to act) that could potentially have once in a lifetime locations and scenery in it.

-Thanks-
