Making a good first impression with other people.

I arranged meeting between me and some other people also wanting to work on their craft. Some of these people have done more than me though, so I'll be the new guy. I've tried arranging these things before, a couple of times, where we teach other everything we know, but it hasn't worked out well, and everyone else just end up going their separate ways.

This time I want to be good and we actually end up making a short film or something though, especially since I made contacts that have more experience this time. So any tips on how to make a good impression, and anything I should bring? Anything? Thanks.

My advice would be to stay humble, positive, and excited about the project. Dictatorships don't work on collaborations. For example, if someone with more experience as a DP (or shooting in general) is part of the project and that's what they agreed to do, they have the final word after discussion. Same with any other job that people agreed to do. If you have patience with them and their mistakes, they're more likely to have patience with you and yours.

Most of all, have fun and make sure everyone does. You're not curing cancer. ;)

You never get a second chance to make a first impression.

Make acquantancies, rather than "contacts". Don't go there knowing them only for what they do. Make friends. Show interest. Be a good judge of character. Be enthusiastic.

Most of all, be honest about yourself, and your position.

Can I work with these guys?
Can I trust them?
Are they as committed as I am, and vice-versa?

You probably do not want to star asking a bunch of vague, quasi-pointless questions. They might think you don't know what you're doing.

Oh, Murdock... you cad ;)

Just smile, be friendly, be modest, be interested, spend as much time listening as you do talking, ask for feedback, accept criticism, put forth your ideas, defend your vision, accept the things you don't know, admit the things you don't understand, pay for coffee.

Publicly scratch your nether regions and laugh aloud with a mouth full of potato chips!
Ask everyone how much they make a year, what their weights are and how far along the women are!
Stare at the caps on their teeth.
Tell them you have a fetish for funny looking noses, may you please take a picture of theirs?
Walk around sniffing each of them.

Save money by not having drinks and whorederves. BYOB!
