Location Scouting Question

I need to find quickly a large apartment and room at least 40 x 40 cheap.

When you have no friends left to ask, what are some other options?

Thanks

Quickly? No friends or family to ask?

Neighbors, cast members, crew members, people at work,
landlord/owner of an apartment nearby with a "for rent"
sign.

apartment and room need not be conjoined I presume.

I drove around looking for empty office space, found lots and started calling the numbers listed on the signs. Generally good responses all around.

And how about a hotel suite rental. Your "supposed" to get permission I guess, but meh.. how do THEY know what your doing up there if you keep it cool..

Another question: How do I approach these people without sounding like a moron? I mean I can afford a few hundred dollars for a weekend. Which isn't bad. But, if they're getting $1500 a month in rent, that's dribble.

From an audio standpoint please don't choose one near a construction site or remodeling going on... It's important for your audio!

Also, I've never had to find a location, but possibly they might be interested if you add their name in the credits.. I personally would be interested if you were asking me that and I was a manager of an apartment complex..

Find an apartment you like, then find out who owns it and call them. Don't settle for what you can get when you're starting out, start with what you want, your vision -- then settle for friends and families places at the end. Screw writing for what you have -- write what you want and fit it to your means afterwards.

I am constantly looking for cool locations. No matter where I am, I'm always coveting buildings, alleys, stores, houses, etc and thinking "Gotta shoot there."

At the same time it's my least favorite part of the filmmaking process. A necessary evil.

Good luck!

How to approach?

Ask your self how you respond to someone wanting to rent your car for the day?

You'd first be suspicious, then you'd worry about insurance, and what the risk to you is etc.
Most people would pass on renting their car to a stranger.

But what about driving someone around to run a few harmless errands in areas and locations you knew well.. then it becomes more interesting...

So your approach is. I need you and your apartment for the evening, were going to have a great time, the place will be cleaner then we found it and you can be there every step of the way. Hey you'd be great as the apartment manager.. you want to be IN the movie.. Said part may not be needed in the final movie, but heck you might get lucky..

maybe..??

Depending on where you live, you won't necessarily need to bring money... come armed with the cost of local print and television advertising in addition to audience numbers and turnover (number of eyes that actually purchase).

Trade location time for a full screen 3-5 second logo, address and contact number which will be displayed to an audience who will want to support local independent filmmaking and the businesses who support them. It's free advertising for them.
