Location scouting in LA for a Jail, bar and a house with a yard...

Hi guys,

I've been browsing around on the net for some potential locations -- I need a Jail cell, a bar and a free standing house with a neglected back yard. I have been using this site:

http://ca.reel-scout.com/loc_detail.aspx?id=7331&g=0&cid=50

There is a great jail cell on here, but I haven't heard back from the people who rent it out. Additionally, it is a little pricey to use, especially since I wouldn't even be using power to shoot in the cell -- just natural light. I haven't found any good bar sets around, and the bars that I have asked all want to charge 1500-2500 to shoot for a day, which is way beyond the budget of this three pager. As for the free standing house, I haven't been able to find the "perfect" one, plus the owners won't let me dig in their yard.

Does anyone out there have a great source for hard to find sets & locations? or has access to these sets for a better deal than what I've been able to find?

Any help pointing me in the right direction would be great!

Thanks,

Tyler

it costs nothing to lease the LHJ site for filming.

Sure, you have to pay for a few items (off-duty cop/security & fire hazard prevention) and carry production insurance, but that is an amazing place for no location fee... and the production insurance should be a given. Unless you're totally no-budget guerilla. In which case, landing legit locations gets a bit harder.

which is way beyond the budget of this three pager.

Can't really suggest anything at all, without knowing how much you are willing to spend.

So... how much is your location budget, if a rental fee of "nothing" was too much? :hmm:

I was hoping to do something either guerilla-ish (since the scene would only be 4-5 shots), or get access to an already existing free standing set and pay for it that way. With production insurance, the location becomes in the area of 2000 bucks -- which is already half of the total project budget. I'm not saying its out of the question, but I'm curious about what other options are out there...

Silver Dream Factory (in Anaheim) has a standing jail set for about 900-1000 a day. You'll need insurance; if you don't have it, I think you can piggyback onto theirs for a fee. (Wooden Nickel lets you do that for lighting gear, btw)

Still, that's just the location. No crew, no power, etc.

How about renting/subleasing some commercial warehouse space for a week or weekend? Downside to that is now you need to build your own jail set, so now having to pay for construction materials & a few decent people to build & paint it... and after the shoot dispose of it... so how much bux does that really end up saving?

Are you friends with any cops? We had the run of a sherrif station for a full weekend, 'cos the director's brother had worked there at some point in the past. Just had to ask, and have that name connection.

There are several standing jail sets in Los Angeles and the OC. Lacy Street
rents at about the same; $800/$1,000 per day and you need full insurance.
Golden Oak, Pointe Studios and Riverfront all have one. The price is about
the same.

They, however, are on stages; no natural light. Lincoln Heights is the real
thing so it does - for a short time during the day.
