lighting Lighting with a black background.

Hey IT,

For a future music shoot i'm tasked with lighting the band members and keeping the background completely black. I could do this with a greenscreen but personally i'd rather do it the old fashioned way. The band want the backdrop completely black so we're planning on covering the studio walls, floor and ceiling with a black material. Is this the best way to achieve this look? What material is best to use? Also any tips for controlling the light spill, i don't want the light hitting the backdrop.

For light spill, just the ole fashion' way: barn doors and flags.

Yeah, definitely go with the black material. I did this in the Mouse Grey video. you can check out the results here http://www.flickerpictures.com/mousegrey.htm

I used a strobe close up, which blasted light on them, and the shot with the singer was lit from above with a hanging shop light and a low-wattage bulb.

also can light from below and that works, too.
