lighting Lighting for Interveiw . . .

Hi, I'm a newbie trying to film a documentary for a school project. I really don't know much about this, but I'm hoping someone might be able to explain how I can protect the identity of the person I'm interviewing. What kind of lighting to I use to keep the person's face completely dark without having to darken the whole room? Thanks for your help!

A technique I've found that does this really well is to make the room completely dark, then light a plain wall with coloured gels on the lights. With no lights on the subject (use barn doors to make sure none falls on them) you can get a nice coloured background, with their silhouette on top of it.

Hope this helps.

Well you could always just cover them with a sheet, a la John and Yoko.

But yeah, if you want to do it with lighting, listen to those guys.

And remember, if the person wants to really be unidentifiable, you will need to mess with their voice. Distort it and change the pitch.

If you're really concerned about anonymity, I just wouldn't record them. Not visually. Body shapes, hair styles, etc. (stuff that can be made out via silhouette), can be quite revealing. Audio interview?
