Kickstarter movie campaign raises $1.6 million in less than 24 hours

Hey, everybody!

So today I was looking at the Kickstarter campaign for the soon-to-be Veronica Mars movie. They were at $185,000 dollars early this morning and I checked back 7 hours later and they are at $1,630,121.

I took pictures of the campaign because it was jumping tens of thousands of dollars by the minute! It's INSANE.

They've raise the $1.6 MILLION in under a 24 hour period.

You can check it out here: Veronica Mars Kickstarter Campaign

Edit: After 2 hours from the time I posted this they have raised well over $2 million. Congratulations to Rob Thomas and those involved!

Another $25,000 in 10 minutes

$1,679,395

I'm just really interested in this!! I'm very excited for Rob Thomas.

Kickstarter will make a nice chunk of money on this as well :)

Obviously they have an established fan base! But I think it's also a well done pitch: why it hasn't happened before, and why they believe they can do it now. Very cool to see. And by saying publicly that Warner Bros. has committed to help with distribution, that rolls some pressure back to them

I almost feel like they knew that it would blow up well over 2mil. Because something of this scale would surely have a higher budget than that

I'd be more impressed if this were an unknown filmmaker funding a personal project. Although I've never heard of it, my impression from the campaign is that this is a well-established franchise with a huge existing fan base.

Eh, I'd expect similar (and more impressive) results if they did it with Arrested Development.

It's impressive that they are able to do so from Kickstarter, but IMO it's pretty unsurprising. There's a lot of Veronica Mars fans out there (obviously) and there's a lot of people that the creators of the show and those surrounding the show would know who have pretty deep pockets. Using Kickstarter as opposed to getting private funding is a great marketing idea - it gets it out there right from the start, as Brendan mentioned I'm sure they would've known they'd probably break some kind of record and get the publicity that goes along with it..
And they get all the goodwill from the people who are supporting it.

Kickstarter is also great because it really gives an indication as to what kind of market there is for products. It's quite possible that there hasn't been a Veronica Mars movie made in the past because studios have thought there's no market for it and that people wouldn't watch it. Using Kickstarter, you know if you get funded there's definitely a market for your movie - this proves that there's at least 35,000+ people who want to see it enough to invest in it, and that's just in the hours it's been up. It's a good way to really know if you're doing the right thing, all the while not using your own money to invest ;) (or only using your own money once you know that it will sell)

It's odd to watch the backer numbers and the money figure climb almost every 10 seconds, it's reminiscent of one of those scam sites...

Also, probably the best promo video for any Kickstarter project I've ever seen
