IT'S FINALLY HAPPENING!!!

It was about 5 months ago when I first started the screenplay for my short film, THE OLD MAN AND THE LION. And finally, I'm going cast/audition the actors this week!

The date is June 15 and I will be auditioning my actors both through Skype and in person. That being said, I do have one actor who wants to audition tomorrow (June 13) because of some complications with the schedule.

I'm effffing nervous but excited at the same time! This my first time with auditions and I just hope I don't mess this up!

So I ask you, what's your first time experience like with casting your actors? Any tips/advice for me?

Wish me luck!!

Make sure you have extra copies of your sides

Some actors may ask for "notes" after running through the sides the first time, and the chance to do it again after getting your input on the first attempt.

Record their auditions, so you can review it later

Relax & have fun

Thanks Zen!

One question. How do I give them directions for me to see their range? Should I give them an adjustment that is totally different from what they should be doing just to see their acting skills/range? Or do I just keep giving them directions just based on what they should do?

For example, should I tell them to make someone mad even though the original intention of the character is to love?

In terms of adjustment, we usually go for a small change to show that the actor can/will take direction, rather than a diametrically opposite interpretation.

To use your example of love, we might say:
This time, you love the person you're talking to, but you've had a bad day at work (or school), and haven't eaten since breakfast.

Thanks guys for all the help! Definitely appreciate it! The actor auditioned this afternoon and it went great! Better than expected. Getting advice from casting director, MARCI LIROFF (E.T., Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Mean Girls etc. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0513924/) also helped a ton.

Looking forward to Friday when I audition more actors!

P.S. Should I start a Production Diary for this short film? Or are those just for feature films?

justinisfilming,

I'm really excited for you. There is alot that goes into the film making progress, but one of the most exciting things for me is to see others interest in being part of the project. That's why I'm thrilled when I get a lot of interest at auditions and casting. Good luck with your film! I'm happy for you. :)
