cinematography Is this a cliche movie opening?

Diagonal crane downs are all the rage. ;)

If we're going epic, there's nothing like a giant wide establishing shot and bringing things in tighter with a crane shot.

What is the tone of scene 1?

A friend has a 20' crane. Just feeling like it's become comparable to the alarm clock going off in the messy bedroom as an overused opening.

But sheesh, 20' is pretty well endowed.

The audience is not suppose to notice camera moves. If you don't want somebody in the audience yelling out "CRANE SHOT," stay away from the crane!

However, since you have access to one, see if you can put it to use in a non-typical way as to not take the audience out of the film.

Good luck!

The opening sequence of Polanski's The Tenant is one huge voeuristic crane-swoop through the interior courtyard of an apartment building, and works really well. Pretty awesome, in fact.

What are you trying to show, by using your crane?

It all depends what you're trying to show! Would you be better off with a 'steadycam walk' through the environment, or a tracking shot.

If you're trying to introduce a single character, it mightn't be the best option. But if you're trying to establish the environment, the crane shot is a great way to go about it!

As I said, it just depends on what the context is.
