Is a Canon t3i (600d) the best in that price range?

Dream - you can still get a GH2 body on eBay UK for £470. I would rather have a used GH2 than a new 600D.

- higher resolution than the 600D straight out of the box, much higher resolution with the hack

- A viewfinder that actually works while you're shooting video

- Autofocus in video mode when you want it (not possible with the 600D)

- 30 minutes of continuous video recording in the EU (as opposed to the 600D's 12 minute limit) [the GH2 has unlimited recording time with the hack]

- easy compatibility with inexpensive classic Canon FD lenses

- resistant to Canon-style shot-ruining moire

Please see these examples of Canon 60D moire side-by-side with the GH2:

True but a used GH2 is more expensive than a new 600D...
And what do you mean with a viewfinder that actually works in video mode? The 600D one works just fine....

The LCD screen may work, but the optical viewfinder that most DSLR shooters use to take still photographs - especially when the sun is out - is blocked.

When recording video in Live View, the mirror blocks the viewfinder. This is often a surprise to people who buy DSLRs for shooting video. It was such a big surprise to me when I tried to shoot video with my Canon T2i/550D that I sold it.

It was a surprise to this T3i/600D shooter as well: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20120105180823AAaUuIR

It was also a surprise to this 60D shooter: http://www.thephotoforum.com/forum/...er-shoot-video-my-cannon-60d.html#post2293397

As a result, companies such as Zacuto have sold a lot of LCD viewfinders to make up for this deficiency, allowing Canon and Nikon DSLR owners to use the LCD as a viewfinder. Here is a quote from Zacuto's advertising: "When shooting video on a DSLR camera, you must use the LCD screen and you must use manual focus [emphasis added]"

This may be true for DSLRs, but it is not true for the GH2 - which has both a viewfinder and autofocus that actually continue to work when you switch from stills to video.

Bill

+1

Bill is totally right. I've been researching the GH2 for months and months, finally bought it a few days ago and using a Helios 44M. the entire setup cost me just over $700 (the price range of the 600D?) and it is a far superior camera. The 600D is a good camera, but the GH2 is a freak of nature, and the prices for this camera are going up and up and up. Get in while you can ! :)
