Indie Film Hell?

Hi guys,

I'm a someone knowledgeable indie film producer and I recently took on a gig after they rejected me at first and took on another very green producer. Now we are in influx. The budget is always changing the EP and her husband (who knows nothing about film) have set a limit but keep on adding things to it, they fought me on being properly insured and are purposely under insuring the film, and they refuse to be honest with SAG/AFTRA. So I told them I want my name off of all the paperwork, it's my professional name on the line and I don't want to be apart of all the lies. Was I right to do this? I basically demoted myself.

Now that's that's done we have 91 pages and before I was brought on they thought 16 days was enough, knowing full well that they cannot afford to go into OT for the union actors. Did I mention 12 locations? Locations that have to be all over the area we live in. One of them they want to lock is 2 hours away.
With those 15 day's the 9th(prep day)-10th are locked and can't be changed, and the 15-26th ( it's a big ass house that's allowing us to cheat some locations)are locked and cant be changed so that leaves the 11-14th to shoot 5 locations one of them once again might be 2 hours away from our base.

I've voiced my opinion time and time again, and they the EP/Dir/Writer and her husband just don't want to listen. The AD is God Bless her heart is trying. They think I'm negative but really I think I'm keepin it real right? Help!

You don't want to be associated with the project, so why are you still there?

It doesn't matter who's right or wrong. If you can't work in cooperation with the producers, move on.

Welcome to indietalk.

Reading only from your perspective and not knowing you or the
other people involved I'll say you're right. You're just keeping it
real and trying to make the production go as smooth as you can.

What kind of help are you looking for from the good people at
indietalk.com? These people aren't being honest, are underinsuring
the production and will go way over budget. And they will blame you.
My advice as someone with experience and someone who has gone
through exactly what you are going through is to get out now. They
are husband and wife and will blame you for everything that goes
wrong and they will never listen to you.

I have the same question as zensteve; why are you putting yourself
in this position?

I wanted to be nice and not leave them hanging. The sad thing is I actually like the script and I have hired some amazing people that I feel responsible for. But I think you're all right. I need to get out before more s**t hits the fan.

I guess I just needed to be reassured I was doing the right thing, I've never left a production before.

Thank you!

I am not trying to pin you down, but if you are going to post something of this serious nature, we would need more information, THEN some of us can help you out.

To put ourselves to blindly answer this type of posting is not in any of our better interests...

It's the old conundrum of a witch hiding within the body of a beautiful maiden.

On the other hand, this is the nature of the beast that is filmmaking.

If they're paying you, do the best you can to get the film completed (but get in writing NOW your name appears nowhere in the credits or production info IMDb, et al).

Many of us would gladly be in your shoes (that is, if you're actually getting paid) and take on this challenge. Perhaps you're just not cut out to produce?

Good luck.

No, I totally hear you. I'm new here and didn't want to post the long sordid story. I figured keep it short not to annoy any of you guys. I'd gladly post more tomorrow. Now I need sleep .
