In what order should I pitch my film which is looking for distribution?

Our feature film is doing the rounds of festivals, while it isn't winning awards, we're getting pretty solid reviews.

Our director thinks we should go straight to the Sales Agents. I'm not so sure that would be best for our genre/niche film.

What would be the order in which I should look at going about distribution? Sales agents, self-distribute, VOD aggregators?

Thanks!

I'm not an expert on sales at all, but here's what I'd do...

If I felt the film had run its course at festivals, I'd see if I could get any meetings with the Sales Agents first to see what they had to say. Maybe some of them saw your film and liked it and it's just a matter of you needing to be aggressive about trying to get it sold. 2nd I would go the VOD route. I think Comedy Horror actually does really well here in general. Lastly, I would self-distribute only as a last resort. I don't know of any successful cases of this besides the film For Lovers Only, but that was a romance film.

Maybe someone else has better advice.

Distribution is like a meal. You don't order just one thing, eat
it and the order another eat that and order something else.

You can look for a sales agent at the same time you explore
self-distribution as the film is still being submitted to festivals.
If you do not interest a sales agent in, say, nine months, you
will have all the info you need for self-distribution so you can
jump eight in.
