This really is a great "how to" for newbies looking to do their first feature. We cover everything from the idea inception to shooting a trailer-scene, to getting financed and then the shoot, post production and screening the film in 10 cities and finally the DVD distribution deals.

Here's a sample scene from the feature:

There's also a book out there called "Make Your Own Damn Movie", which is a great reference for first-time indie filmmakers.... It was written by Lloyd Kaufman, creater of Troma Studios and it has some really good stuff.

I'm sure that is true, but this is a classified ad, so it is not the place to discuss books ;)

Thanks

My 1,000th post!!!!

I've done filmmaking panels with Lloyd Kaufman in Indianapolis and in Milwaukee. He's a great guy and very knowledgeable. There's even a DVD series for the MAKE YOUR OWN DAMN MOVIE, which consist of mostly the DVD extras for the TROMA movies.

Loyd's ideas are translatable but he started with (and still does) shoot on film with budgets most indies of today aren't used to. My book is about how you go from making DV shorts for the web to making a feature film on film. And the DVD this thread is about is a document of that journey as well.

Sarah! *gasp*

I think you should ban her. Ha! JK.

I wish your book well Sonny. I'll keep it in mind when people ask for such a thing.

This feature IN THE TRENCHES OF AN INDIE FILM is playing as an official selection to the GEAUGA LAKE FILM FESTIVAL on Saturday June 13th, 2009!!!

Thanks all for the kind words. Check it out sometime.

I am confused. The scene I watched looked like it was a making of a war movie and it doesn't really didn't show me important steps in indie-filmmaking. I was ready to watch a scene about how there was no money in the budget for something and how you got around it or how you couldn't secure a location so you had to improvise and how you did that. I did only catch one scene so maybe there is more in the movie. Is there? Looks cool either way I am just confused on what is actually in the movie.

You have to watch the whole movie. That kind of stuff is there, but not in every single scene.

I still gotta get me a copy of the original Horrors of War. :)

Remember to think GRINDHOUSE when you finally do watch it.

I 'flixed HoW and really enjoyed the movie. Right in line with other stuff in its genre. Reminded me a bit of the bunker with special effects and a larger scope.

I just want to put the shout out for this documentary again. I just got an email from someone who thanked me for making a 'making of' feature that was not about a big Hollywood production, but a more realistic and attainable way to make a feature film.

That was a big boon and I neglect this, even though IN THE TRENCHES OF AN INDIE FILM is probably the best overall thing I've made. Unlike the feature film we made inside the doc, the narrative and characters are clear and concise.

I hope some of you might consider this for your Xmas stockings, especially those trying to make a low budget feature film.

I think the Troma stuff is what started me thinking, hey I could make this trash & sleaze.

I bought "Make Your Own Damn Movie". A complete waste. You can get much more good info for free on Youtube

Lloyd is much better in person. I didn't like his book, and the DVD's are more silly than informative. My documentary is much more intended to be instructive and insightful. I have this thing where every time I learn something in filmmaking, I want to share it because there was no one to teach me and it was just as YouTube was rising, so it wasn't there for me yet.

This DVD is the culmination of several experiences I got making my first feature film. I share the mistakes just as much as the successes, and with HORRORS OF WAR, there were more missteps that other people could learn from vicariously.

These are hopefully entertaining as much as they are informative.

I'll see it .

Right on . I'll see if it would be good to suggest to my writer's group . They have a lot of questions .:cheers::clap::director:
