I'm going to the video store

i realise they haven't had videos for some time, but for some reason 'dvd store' just doesn't sound right. anyway. i'm going to my local since i have nothing else to do tonight. their best deal is for 3 weeklies and 1 new release. what should i get? assume there are a lot of must see films i haven't seen...

<3

george clooney- must see :D
hmm, i don't like movies about paranormal stuff like aliens (with a few exceptions) and little girls with long black hair. other than that, i'm pretty open. i suppose i probably like comedies, dramas and actions more than anything, but i guess i'm just a simpleton :p

Well I really liked district 9 maybe you should check that out, comedies, uhm Role Models? 40 Year old virgin? The Hangover? Grandmas boy? Wedding Crashers?

I know this is lame but I recently watched Marley and Me on HBO and it was super sad, and I like movies that get a good strong emotion out of me!

Since this is an indie site I thought I'd throw in one I recently saw on netflix called TiMER or something like that, it wasn't bad at all, pretty funny.

Anyways, hope I helped!

hmm, i've heard mixed reviews on district 9. i suppose i should see it and judge for myself. lol, role models. i actually haven't seen grandmas boy, but the others i have and enjoyed.
marley and me is pretty sad :( i like movies that can make you feel something as well.
suggested much appreciated, i like your style :D
what is this netflix thing that everyone's always talking about? i'll have to look into that...

If you have a decent internet connection its super worth it. You can watch unlimited streaming movies and then get all the newest releases sent to your house in batches of however much your willing to pay for. I do the $15 a month for 2 hard dvd's at a time (soon as I send them back the next ones on my list come a few days later) It optimizes my viewing time and has amazing suggestions on movies i'd like. Its enabled me to watch many many more movies than I would have been able to afford before. I probably watch at least 75 movies a month now. The also have a great collection of indie stuff!

Not sure if you were being sarcastic, either way, thats what I think ;) do with it as you will!

P.S. Always judge a movie yourself. Everyone I know LOVED D9, but there are tons of things that can change the experience of a movie for someone. So watch it and let me know what you thought!

NetFlix started several years back, as a service that delivered DVD's through the postal service. It operates with a monthly subscription fee. After the DVD's have been watched, they get mailed back to NetFlix in the envelope they provide; postage already paid.

About two years ago they started moving to a 'net-based streaming model. Included with the monthly subscription, now, is the capability to stream movies directly to your computer. If you have certain hardware, you can wirelessly redirect that to your regular television - or in my case, to a digital projector.

It's well worth the monthly subscription, if you like watching many films.

Other video-rental chains have dabbled with similar systems, as well. Blockbuster (now going out of business) and Walmart have given it a shot, with lesser success. Give it a few more years, and digital delivery will be how it's all done. I'm actually surprised that you don't seem to have a similar service down in AU.

But... back to movies to rent!

i like movies that can make you feel something

oooooh, i see. sigh.
i wasn't being sarcastic life, i was being self deprecating (i'm kinda out of the loop) lol. that seems pretty awesome, but at the same time it makes me sad. i could launch into a big thing about how things like p2p file sharing and netflix have basically put good old fashioned video stores out of business, but i can't be bothered. i guess that's just the world isn't it? technology. it's a cycle or something. i know what i'm trying to say....
anyway.
that movie looks interesting, i'm adding it to my list. now i've got 5 movies to choose from (i'm assuming they might not have them all). this is my last weekend of freedom so maybe i should get some more. it might be a while before i have time to sit down and really watch something again :(

Hey, while you're checking out that "Netflix" thingy, you might want to look into this new device called the "cellular phone". I hear people are using it to "text" each other. Also, there's something about "email".

I'm sorry, Zensteve and LIFE. I can't believe you tried to explain NETFLIX to her! She's on the internet, for crying out loud. And she's nerdy enough to be hanging out in a forum!

Anyway, cliche (can I call you that?), I'm going to offer you some random "must-see's" that are a little off the beaten path, cuz you already are aware of the other ones.

"Born Into Brothels" - Based on what it's about, you might expect it to be dark and depressing as shit. Just the opposite, it's an absolute joy to see these (some of them, anyway) kids rise above their surroundings.

"Waiting for Guffman" - This one's only slightly off the beaten path; tons of people are fans of it. No disrespect of course, but judging by your relative age, I wonder if you've seen it yet.

"Waltz with Bashir" - Half documentary/half artistic re-enactment, this movie keeps your interest, but intentionally keeps your emotion at bay, until an unexpected ending that's like a hard punch in the stomach.

"Avatar" - Oh, wait. Sorry, wrong thread.

"Dark City" - It's not a must-see must-see. But it's probably the best sci-fi that nobody's ever heard of. It's half murder-mystery, half-kinda-matrixy, 100% awesome.

ahahaha. very good. i used to work at my local blockbuster. free rentals. i never needed anything else :D
my friends call me angela, my wife calls me late for dinner but you can call me anytime.
just in case anyone was wondering, i did not make a list and consequently forgot some of the suggested titles. and also they didn't have some others that i did remember. so what i ended up getting was:
dazed and confused
rio bravo
the fountain
waltz with bashir
carlito's way
apocalypse now

the store has no arthouse section and i have a bad memory, so that's the best i could do -_-
thanks everyone <3
