Idea for my first Movie!

Hey Guys,

I heard many say that you should produce a Horror Movie as the first one, but a Friend of mine came up with a different Idea.
What do you think?
Would it make a good Movie?

I'd like to focus on two elements - conspiracy and family.

There's a famous Leo Tolstoy quote which goes

Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.

I'd like to be able to use that concept combined with the idea of conspiracy.

People will do amazing things for family - sometimes good and sometime with awful consequences. If we can have the film driven by two opposing elements - the good (our investigator) and the bad (the state) one trying to cover up something because it involves family of importance and the other of trying to discover the truth.

It's interesting. I don't know if I'd call it an idea for a movie, it's more of a theme. Do you have any ideas for a story (you've talked about people (who?) and something (what?)) that fits this theme? It could be good.

As far as these people who say you should produce horror as your first film, don't listen to them. I want to make a horror film, because I love horror. Don't make a horror for the sake of it. Sure, horror can be extremely cheap and easy to make, but if your not passionate about the genre, you don't know it inside out and you dont respect it, the film you make will, without a doubt, be terrible. The same is true for any genre. Make whatever you want to make, your story and characters will dictate the genre.

What those people are suggesting is a filmmaker make a more commercial
project when hoping to sell the film. For your first movie anything that
interests you personally is the way to go.

I agree with mad_hatter; this is a theme, not a story. It might make a good
movie if there is a good story. Good against bad is a very common theme
found in just about every story ever told so you have a solid foundation.
Covering for family is also a very common theme that just about everyone
can relate to.

Using those themes you could write a horror script, a comedy, a thriller, a
drama, a science fiction or even a musical; so now you need to come up with
a story and it could make a good movie.
