People have started business with far less than 3/5 million. You
would set aside a specific amount to run the company for two to
three years - paying employees, rentals, offices, insurance just
like any small business. You would make some films and you
would buy some films and you would set up your distribution
network.

All that will take a good couple of years, some luck and a lot of
good business decisions. The three founders of The Asylum did
it - I don’t see why you couldn’t.

A budget for a movie like that is in the $800,000 to $1,200,000 range.

Wise move, Rik! There is a huge market for Christian films. And in my opinion, they're starving for quality content.

In a facebook post, one of our IT'ers, whom I believe is devout Christian, lamented that the best Christian films are ironically made by heathens.

Well, I don't think you have to be a heathen to make a good Christian film, but I do think there's something to the comment. It seems to me like a lot of the people who make Christian films are doing so because they want to spread the word, not because they necessarily love filmmaking. They might love filmmaking, but that might not be the first reason they got into it.

But if you take someone who is filmmaker first, and got into this just because they love doing it, and ask them to make a film that spreads the word of Jesus, they are probably going to make a better film (while still delivering the message).

Could the audience tolerate Act I and the depths of Act II?

However, we could just go the The Asylum route and cut Acts I & II, skipping to Act III. Hmm... :hmm:



What would a Christian SciFi/Fantasy film be like?
Could we LITERALLY get away with deux ex machina? Hmm... :hmm:

For me, a great Christian film would be one that uses the teachings of Christ as a very obvious focal point of the theme of the movie, and also serves as a direct catalyst that helps our hero finally figure out how to solve the problem. You could do this in any genre. Our hero is faced with an impossible problem, but in the third act, finally has a WWJD moment, and that clarity leads them to resolve the conflict.
 
That's makes sense.

The more I thought about it the more I kept cycling back to the MINORITY REPORT-like template which essentially a crime thriller set in the future. It's just the regular action adventure running around using techy-future objects.

A Easter-Christmas Christian could be engaged in some future action adventure crime scenario utilizing future-cool tech to solve/resolve all woes - EXCEPT - for the one that forces him/her to _______________ (insert pet Christian value here) forcing him/her into a life of committed Christianity.

Now, if someone wants to be clever and plan a few steps ahead (ahem!) you set a trilogy in motion by pulling a "Darth Vader Genesis" + good guys divergence from the path story.
"A" breaks left. "B" breaks right. Roles of biblical mythology are then cast.
Now you have the potential for at least the sequel.
The cinematic story of how Lucifer fell from grace has yet to be effectively pulled off.

LUCIFER! The musical!

I sincerely hope this does not get into a discussion of religion.

My goal - as stated in a previous post - is to make a living doing
what I love. Making a “bad” film like the ones Asylum makes is,
to me, making a movie; and that’s what I want to do. A Christian
film like any genre has very specific “rules” to follow. I know those
expectations in the musical, in a mystery, in horror, in thriller so
I know I can apply that to a Christian film.

I agree with you CF - one of the problems with some of the Christian
films is the filmmakers are devout Christians first and filmmakers
second. A good writer can follow the genre expectations and write a
great story regardless of their personal views. If a writer who isn’t
“into” horror can study the genre they can write a good horror story.

I understand (and respect) that for many of the people posting here,
passion is the most important thing. Many even feel it’s selling out
morally to write something one is not passionate about. I don’t feel
that way. So I am free to write (and direct) any movie about anything.

One of the most successful films those “idiots” at Asylum picked up
was “Sunday School Musical”.

On a side note: my father was the star of the very first film from
Unusual Films Productions. They have been making Christian films
since 1955.
