I Love/Hate "Rise of the Planet of the Apes".

I am not sure I can stand to watch another planet of the apes film but I agree the trailer looks pretty good. I think I may rent it if it gets good reviews.

Believe or not, I thought the Tim Burton version was OK. Especially with the make up and some of the action sequences. I look forward to seeing this reboot as well.

new international trailer...

WOW! The American trailer makes it look like it'll just be an SFX Action Blockbuster. This trailer makes it look like it might actually have a heart.

One can hope. My anticipation-level has just quadrupled.

I love it when my negative-minded predictions prove wrong. "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" is absolutely amazing, as far as I'm concerned. I love it! A copy of a brief review I just posted on facebook:

Please trust that I'm not one to give away spoilers -- THE PROTAGONIST IS A CHIMP! James Franco's character plays second fiddle to our true hero, Ceasar, and what an enthralling character he is.

This reboot is more than on par with the 1968 original. It's a thrilling Summer Blockbuster, with requisite Action Pieces, wrapped around a story that delivers surprisingly astute social commentary, for those whom are willing to listen.

But most important of all, "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" makes an emotional connection far deeper than you may be prepared for. -- "A+"!!!!

I almost cried watching the full trailer in the theater. I think I'm gonna be a wreck watching the whole film.

Looking forward to it though.

I'm reading this from several critics.

I gotta say, from the trailers I hate, hate, hate the look of the CG
apes - not the CU's of Caesar which look amazing - and it give me
the impression this is an exercise in efx tech. So you're saying that
isn't the case? That there is an actual story here? That there are
characters we care about?

I want to see it - I'm just cautious. If one person said this I would
dismiss it - I do not base my movie going on others - but since more
and more people are saying this; I become interested.

Looks good :)

I'm looking forward to seeing it, probably next Thursday. Irritating that you Americans have got this way earlier than us again *shakes fist*

Yeah bro i have no clue what your talking about, i saw the movie last night, The CGI looks amazing. You can laugh all you want but that movie was F'in awsome

Looks like a joke to me. The CGI is terrible, and why even use CGI? Dressing people up as the apes worked perfectly in both previous films of the same name.

The story doesn't even correlate with the original. I'm not excited about this at all, I'm just going to laugh bitterly at the people who are. :grumpy:

Loved this movie. Best summer flick yet. Beats the crap out of "Captain America" and the very flat "Cowboys and Aliens."

The CG is very believable in the context of the film, so ignore the haters -- and another win for Andy Serkis. Engaging, fun story with and old-school, 1970s-style sci-fi morality tale underpinning it all. And the theme? Spartacus! Spartacus!

Plus, I just heard it got the PETA stamp of approval.

The premier here in Sweden is first in 10 days from now. Stupid waiting with premiers in other country's....

Oh, it absolutely has a story, and it's a real triumph. Ceasar's arc takes us through joy and heartbreak, all the way up to a very satisfying ending that is rather invigorating.

Now, of course it is true that any review is very personal, and when I give a movie a grade, I'm not trying to make any sort of objective judgment (cuz that's not possible). I expect most people won't enjoy it as much as I did, but I feel like it's a pretty good bet that most people will leave very satisfied with the story, and especially satisfied with the arc of our protagonist.

As for the CGI, overall, I think it's pretty damn good. It was spotty in places. For me, it was most noticeable whenever there was human-chimp physical contact -- it's like you can see a crease, or something. Needless to say, the minor flaws in the CGI did not bother me enough to take me out of the story.

I don't want my praise to get out of hand, and make anybody think it's some deep, contemplative thinker of a movie. It is a Summer Blockbuster. A thrilling one. But it's got a solid heart, and a very real character that we can all latch onto, and I love it!

6/10

REALLY heavy handed of course, lots of plot holes you could drive a Mack truck through, but overall pretty good silly fun. The CG looks best in close, very good when just an ape's face, when they use it in wide shots it looks like a videogame cinematic. Wish they had stuck closer to the story arc of the originals.

Which is why I asked you. I know we feel pretty much the same
about subjective/objective. I dismiss the "ignore the haters" and
"you can laugh" comments - as if because in my opinion the CG
looks bad I am a hater and not a person with a valid opinion - and
take into consideration a thoughtful discussion of opinions about
movies.

As I said, if I heard that from one or two people it wouldn't change
my mind, but now several people (including many critics) are saying
that. That peaks my interest. I think I'm going to give this one a
shot after all.

It IS playing at my favorite theater - the Cinerama Dome in
Hollywood.

You have a point, but what I was thinking was that most of the negative reviews of the film in this thread so far were based on the trailer, which is a pointless exercise. I ignore opinions from anybody who hasn't seen the movie. :hmm:

My opinion on the CG is based only on the trailer - not pointless
to me at all. Movies have trailers to entice an audience. When that
trailer doesn't entice me I have an opinion on it. The efx in that movie
look terrible in the trailer, the trailer give me the impression the entire
movie is an exercise is special effect technology and story and characters
take a back seat.

All based only on the trailer.

If you choose to ignore my opinion I respect that. No need to involve
yourself in a discussion you feel is a pointless exercise. I don't see how
that makes me a "hater".

Cool! My favorite theater is also a Cinerama, in Seattle. I'm yet to see a true Cinerama movie, though; would like to do that, someday.
I've been in that theater. Very cool.

When Arclight took over the Dome and renovated it they showed "This is
Cinerama" and "How the West Was Won" in three camera cinerama. After
the matinee showing the 30 people (!) in the audience were invited up to
the projection booth to see how the system worked. Very cool.

Back on topic:

Several people at work this weekend said pretty much the same thing as you.
I still may hate the movie (and then I can be called a "hater) but I'm going
to give it a shot this week. At the very least the Cinerama Dome has excellent
freshly popped corn with real butter and freshly brewed iced tea...

I don't see how that makes me a "hater".

I stand corrected -- I see now that repeating "hate, hate, hate" couldn't possibly make someone a hater.

Speaking of Cinerama, I recently saw the restored version of "Windjammer" at the Cinerama Dome in LA. It's a gorgeous, homoerotic adventure about boys on a boat. The print was digital, with the three images united in one, incredibly huge image. I took a tour of the projection booth afterwards, and saw their gear. The movie was a pretty gigantic file running off of an Aja Ki box.

Can't wait to go back to see a real Cinerama projection. I'm going to the "Napoleon" screening in Oakland next year for some triple-image goodness.
