Hey Guys!

Hello there! Im a fourth year student studying in the computer science discipline (strange I know) but I love films, and recently realized that becoming a director would be my dream job. Even if I dont end up pursuing it as a career I would still like to learn more about this awesome and creative industry! I know after effects like the back of my hand and have a youtube channel I post videos.

The other friend I had starting film at the same time as me is also studyin computer science. My neighbour is doing film and law. Met a guy in class today also doing computer science + film. Not as odd as you may think ;)

Oh, and yeah, welcome... and stuff.

Okay.

I went to your channel.

Is your goal to become a VFX artist or a filmmaker? Just curious.

In an ideal world I would like to be a filmmaker, a VFX artist will probably turn into a hobby of mine at some point. All ive made in the past for my channel are video game montages, but my interest in film has exploded over the past year haha

Okay, here's my advice.

Write a screenplay.

Here's a good free website. You can pay $10 a month for additional features.

Get a camera

You don't need anything special. Just something that can record video.

If you want high-qualty results for a cheap price, I recommend a Canon T3i.

Shoot something

Anything. Really.

Shoot events, parks, gardens, anything.

You could shoot a one-man short film of yourself. All you need is a tripod and camera.

It's good to get used to your camera and experimenting with it. Try to mimic shots from your favorite films.

Get actors

Gather family and friends to act in your films.

Edit

You don't need anything special or advanced, just something that can trim video.

Upgrading gear

Once you have made a good amount of short films, and are good with the gear you have, you can begin investing in more gear, such as better lenses, lighting, and mics.

Learn about your craft.
