hd camera for $494.00 or £300.00 sterling

What would you recommend me to get for this price tag (I know it's pretty low, that's all I can afford at the min )

Just looking for something which is going to be a good starter camera to make shorts etc....

Get a Canon T3.

But, save up for a Canon T2i. Prices will drop since there is now a T3i.

Check out the Samsung H200, the Sony HDRCX115EB, the
Panasonic TM55 and the Panasonic SDR-S50.

All in your range. The main issue is audio. No camera in your
price range has a mic input so you can only use the on camera
mic. To get good audio you need to get the mic very close to
the actors. this is done with a mic on a boom pole. However,
since this is all you can afford now, any of these cameras will
be fine to start with.

No Mic input??? That sucks, best leave that for a while and get saving some more
