Have YOU made a profit on your film?

I'm eighteen years old. And yes I've made a profit on some of my projects. Not a boatload by any means, but definitely a profit. I know it's not impossible to make a profit on indie films.

And yes, one of my current projects is being funded ;). So it is possible :).

And think of Giants like Peter Jackson (first film was an indie film made with some friends over the course of four years) and that movie, although controversial to some, was a great success and launched his career.

It is possible. Don't let yourself say "this can't be done". There's always a way.

Anyway. I'm done. Sorry lol

Three of my Three features made a profit, fourth feature is in post. I hope those that are getting into filmmaking do not get discouraged by some of these posts, there are many ways to make a profit even with a $900,000 indie film. There are some "rules" you have to apply though. Like someone mentioned before, know your niche. There are certain companies that WILL screw you over and there is nothing you can do about it, but if you take your time a do the research you can fin low budget distributors that are reliable. So as some of you know that there is a new player in town - Distribber, lets you keep 100% of the profit (after you pay a fee). I am doing a day to day review on them as I am using them with my next horror film. Everything from submitting the project to receiving the profits, to comparing them to past sales.

I just read on the Distribber website that if you want to submit an HD film (and of course if you shot HD it's a shame not to have it viewed that way) your audio has to have 8 channels - see below
Audio: Must have 8 channels of audio

* 5.1 – L, R, C, LFE, Ls, Rs / PCM Little Endian / Each audio channel needs to be its own track
* Ch. 7 stereo left, Ch. 8 stereo right / PCM Little Endian / Each audio channel needs to be its own track

I don't know about the rest of you, but I didn't do this sophisticated of a sound mix!

No. But I keep working on it... LOL.

Biggest expense was in equipment (owned). Figure if I keep making new projects a reality and those productions keep getting better... eventually something will shine and all past work will get noticed.

You know, throw enough stuff at a wall, eventually something will stick...

I have not made a profit yet since I only made a short and it was done by just me. Ha....

Anyways, I have talked to a DP / Director friend of mine that I worked with on a few short films as actor. Anyways, he said he has made money on all the shorts he has done. I know he sells copies of his shorts and tee shirts for them to cast and crew. He does give cast and crew a free dvd if they helped make the film. A lot of the people buy shirts. I think some people will buy the DVDs to give to people they know and want extra copies besides the fee copy they got. Normally cast and crew will go to screenings of their film and some of his other films too. I am sure they buy copies of his other films at times. I did. Anywyas, he probably does not make much on these short films but he makes a little. His full time job is a film editor and he does do some DP work.
