Goon the movie: case study.

I just came across this movie, made in Canada.

It apparently made just over $2 million worldwide, which is not much. I presume it must have lost money, because, in films, money can go up like smoke. I'm asking because I think I would like to be a producer, so I'm trying to get a sense of these things.

Any insights?

"Goon" starring Seann William Scott and Liev Schreiber and written
by Evan Goldberg who wrote "Pineapple Express", "The Green Hornet"
and "Superbad!" was picked up by Magnolia for $2,000,000 at the
Toronto Film Festival in September. It was put into limited released
in the UK only 5 weeks ago. It will get a limited US release at the
end of March and a Canadian release in two weeks.

That kind of money for a limited release film in only two territories in
five weeks isn't bad. Before you write it off as loosing money, you
should wait for the Canada and US release.
