Good Advice for beginners?

I recently watched the 1914 silent film "TIllie's Punctured Romance" with Charlie Chaplin on TCM. I realized more that silent films can still be impactful just like modern movies. It got me thinking that this could be useful for people who may just be starting out as filmmakers or who don't have the "top of the line" equipment. If you change the color to black and white, it seems you can get away with more as far as lighting, and the sound could be backround music. It could look modern or old, and "technical merit" may be questionable if you're making it look like it was made a long time ago. Just thought this could help people in struggle with money, resources, experience, etc. Many examples are on youtube for silent films, and charlie chaplin was a big actor in these films. Has anyone ever attemped to make something that would have been standard at an earlier era? What do YOU think?
